• ISS Ham Radio Reception in Raleigh, North Carolina

This is my recording of the reception of Colonel and Flight Engineer Mike Hopkins (@AstroIllini) inside the International Space Station talking to students from Berkeley Middle School in Williamsburg, Virginia, United States.

I recorded this today around 1:30 PM EST on my phone. I was sitting on the edge of my car's trunk parked at Carolina Pines Park while my dog played in a fenced in area behind me.

I decided to setup next to my car for two reasons. First, I was worried that the battery in my handheld radio might die as I hadn't charged it in a while. If it did I could have switched the antenna to my ham radio installed in my car. Second, the car provided a nice stationary platform to put the phone on to record from.

If you want you can read some details about the day's events and the various organizations and programs that were involved with making this happen:

The simplified explanation of the antenna I provided was based on the description for this image of Yagi-Uda antennas on Wikipedia:
