This video covers my latest purchase of an AnyTone AT-588 transceiver, rated for 66 MHz to 88 MHz and thus suitable for unmodified use on 4m. The transceiver is rated for 50w / 25w / 12w output and tests verify this; adjustable frequency steps from 5 - 25 kHz, various tone call functions, a noise reduction system (jury is out on that for me). The radio has repeater functionality but this is irrelevant for 4m.
High power tests of 2 min TX & 1 min RX for 30 minutes saw the radio case temperature rise from 23C to 63C and modest power output degradation began above 60C (passive cooling). Frequency stability was very good (less than 20Hz with 40c temperature change) after 1 hour initial stabilisation.
RX audio is very powerful and would hold its own in noisy vehicles but does lack a little bass response (hardly surprising given size). Audio resolution is good and improved with a quality external speaker. TX audio is OK (not the best, not the worst) and have had no poor reports.
Do not recommend running 50w on long TX sessions without adding a fan (more than 3 minutes TX with 3 minutes cooling-off).
