Biography
First licensed as a Technician with the sequential call KO4VVN in January 2022, I acquired my current callsign out of respect for Gerald Warr (SK), the original holder of W4UTZ and my inspiration for getting on the air.
I was inactive until summer 2024 when I built a QRP Labs QDX-M kit for the 10m band and started making contacts with FT8/FT4. That led to an upgrade to Extra in February 2025, a multiband second QDX, and a restoration project Kenwood TS-830S hybrid.
At my QTH in Charlotte, NC, I use a little amplification with the QDX for digital modes, radiating ~25 watts from an attic dipole. The TS-830S is now in service for SSB and those times when I need a little more power to get through the congestion on the FT8 waterfall.
I do occasionally operate away from EM95ne, and when that happens I am QRP (~5 watts), traveling with the QDX and a wire dipole/EFHW or running mobile with a vehicle-mounted base-loaded vertical.
