| Biography Licensed first in 1968 as G3XLQ in England. No novice licences back then. You had to read and send 12 wpm morse code for a solid 5 minutes each with no errors. No multiple-guess testing. You had a City and Guilds Institute Number 55 WRITTEN exam that included drawing a complete transmitter circuit diagram from memory. The questions were all answered with complete sentences and paragraphs. If you were illiterate or under the age of 16 you could not qualify to become a radio amateur in Great Britain at all in those days. Came to USA in 1967. No Reciprocal Permits were yet being issued, so any operating had to be clandestine. Best to stick to shortwave listening. However, in 1968 was issued G3XLQ/W4 and very pleased to be back on the air.
