Biography
I passed my novice exam in 1968 at age 11 and went on the air (WN2ERL) with a used Drake R4B and T4XB (state of the art at the time for a novice!). Joined the Coast Guard in 1976 and I am a member of the Coast Guard Amateur Radio Club. I am now retired and enjoying my free time chasing DX and rag chewing with old and new friends on the air. I am frequently asked about my QSL card. The lighthouse in the picture is Montauk Point light. It is located on the southern tip of Long Island and a friend of mine was the last keeper stationed there before the light was automated. Since I am a native of Long Island, a former "Coastie", and my second love is the sea, it seemed appropriate to choose this picture to represent me and my hobby.
I am currently running a Kenwood TS-2000 with a Heil Proset Elite. For antennas, I have a full-size G5RV for 160-6m, a Hustler 5BTV ground mounted vertical, and a Diamond X-200A for 2m and 70cm. I am a member of ARRL (accredited VE), Navy MARS, and soon to be old, old timer. Also a member of the Larkfield Amateur Radio Club.
I love to work cw and I am frequently on 80, 40, and 20, and occasionally on 30 & 17m. When I work SSB, I am usually on 20m and sometimes 80 or 40. Also enjoy digital modes on 20m.
In the car I am running an Icom IC-2200H into an MFJ dual band antenna. Also have a Kenwood TH-D72A HT that I use on 2m/70 cm and for APRS and SkyCommand. I can usually be found on the LARC, LIMARC, or GSBARC repeaters.
I am married with five grown children (3 girls, one son and a step-son), five grandchildren, and two dobermann's. My son followed my footsteps and is stationed in Virginia with the USCG.
I would also like to thank two sk's that were a big part of my life and my love of amateur radio. John Pomfret (W2AAF) and Walter Russell (WB2EBO). You are both missed very much and I pray that you will rest in peace.
