Biography

Our activities are primarily research in Solar Wind, using auroral bounce via HF on various commercial bands other than ham bands only. Our station consists of several mobile units, and includes one small sloop of 15.5 metres.

We also teach fundamental chemistry in remote regions via Skype. Fundamental, as in assisting people in the production of simple Solar Electric Panels to provide LED illumination in regions where there is no power whatever. In addition, frequently there is no internet available and we may have to use a satellite link for communications.
All of these operations are entirely solar powered.

All facilities, radios, science gear, and LED lighting are provided by Solar Panels on the roof of our bus, giving a maximum charge current of 51 amperes at 13.6 vdc. This current keeps nearly 1.5 tonnes of lead acid batteries under the bus, fully charged. Pretty good ballast as well.

While the Vehicle is a Ford, motive power is supplied by an International Harvester 8 litre diesel engine with a turbocharger. More important, this engine is fitted with two Leece Neville alternators delivering a maximum output over 300 Amperes, when needed.

HF radio, both amateur and commercial services are use to fill in where there is no footprint from the satellites. Systems such as Pactor, Amtor, and ROSE are in service.

The entire equipment bay is on Solar Power. Energy storage is nearly 2300 # of lead acid batteries stowed below the motor bus, in which we spend an abnormal amount if time.

Our independence from outside supplies is provided by carrying 2.5 tons of food on board allowing any individual unit to remain in the field for extended periods.

Our system and network is open to any serious questions and / or operators. Live video feeds from the instruments are freely available on Skype most of the time.

Amateurs may call in via Skype at any time. Our Skype address is VY1SK-radio

Try HF on 14.225 Mhz.

Next adventure is to the Philippines in early 2014 as we will do our fifth trans-Pacific crossing in a small sloop. An estimated 4 to 5 month adventure.

Internet access at sea is via "Bushmail" or "Sailmail" allowing a connection, pretty well at all times, though the bandwidth is severely limited due to the HF connection.

73's from the bunch at VY1SK as we continue to travel the world with Ham Radio..............
