Utilize the RS-232 protocol to troubleshoot problems in data communications lines between exchanges and SIAC, and Member firms and SIAC. Understand Tandem access procedures to be able to "bring-up" circuit data and circuit configuration for use as a troubleshooting tool. Heavy use of ProComm Plus communications platform for access to various system databases. Must be able to take verbal instructions for use with documentation to locate and analyze trouble-shoot problems. Work with customers over the telephone to re-configure and trouble-shoot modem problems. Setup and install File Servers and PC workstations for clients. Implement Local Area Network protocols, standards for physical layer, data link layer and network layer communications. Utilize the use of data communications practice as well as physical layer testing. Use of the three protocol elements, syntax, semantics and timing also provide net-work addressing, error detection and correction (retransmitting), and status information. Use protocol hierarchy (IP, TCP/IP, X.25, etc) for station linking via a network. Install the Open Systems Interconnect Model and its layers, frame construction and reduction. Point-to-Point communication (Layer 2) and X.25 Packet Switched Network Communication (Layer 3) and the X.25 Frame Format for Wide Area Networks. An understanding of character oriented protocols and bit oriented protocols. Heavy use of High Level Data Link Control (HDLC), I-Frame Format, S-Frame Format and U-Frame Format for long distance microwave links to reduce propagation delay. Use of Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) and Systems Network Architecture (SNA) for use in communication among IBM computers, terminals and office systems, also for use in communicating to industry standard networks.

Load and bind the Netware drivers for connectivity. Load INSTALL.NLM to create further functionally by defining a Netware partition and initializing the system volume. Define the two (2) critical startup files STARTUP.NCF and AUTOEXEC.NCF. Load additional NLM's to provide additional customized configuration. Create a workstation environment and install connectivity software on the distributed clients.

To setup, test and install line equipment for customer ordered lines. Test 24 circuit channel banks for proper line interface and dip switch setting. A knowledge of the different types of channel banks and configurations and the DS-1signal format, alternate mark inversion (AMI) and bipolar violation (BPV). Understand the purpose for bipolar with 8-zero substitution (B8ZS), signal timing and ones density. Understanding of the 1.544 Mb/s DS-1 frame and the D4 superframe pattern. Run test of T-1 spans for FCC tariff requirements of performance without the span removed from service by using Extended Superframe Format (ESF) and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC). Use of the Hard 645 Test Set and setup of T-Berd test equipment to run the Quasi-Random Signal Source (QRSS) and program Kentrox T-SmartLink for T-1 bit error rate and customer ordered options. A knowledge of what is to be tested and basic test measurements Bit errors, BPV's, Frame errors and CRC errors. Setup and reorganize a file and storage system for hardware and channel bank electronic cards. Work with national sales personnel to setup electronic equipment and Sprint specific specialized electronic hardware for customer orders for installations by field personal. Part-time management of trouble call desk and field personal call routing and system network operational problems.

To execute for The New Jersey Bell Company at the Bayville, Forked River and Toms River Central Office a complete move of the Digital Multiplex System 100 series switch without the interruption of service to customers, a "Hot Slide". A knowledge of all the hardware aspects of a complete installation of the DMS 100 family of switches. Must have a strong ability to read blue- prints to interpret the various placement of bays, cable troughing and power connection. Must be able to use heavy equipment power tools.

To execute rollover's of existing circuits and spans on a microwave transmitter to the DMS-250 Fiber Optic Links. To execute new installs of customer ordered circuits on the DMS-250 Fiber Optic Network. A knowledge of T-1 spans as it relates to voice and data. An understanding of pulse code modulation (PCM) and pulse amplitude modulation or 64 kb/s standard rate or digital signal-level zero (DS 0) as for the voice portion of the time division multiplex (TDM). An understanding of how digital signal-level one (DS-1) are created and attenuated in transmission. A knowledge of what regenerative repeaters do for signal level and what is sampling. A functioning knowledge of Telco implementations is most helpful. Assigned the task of posting the Automatic Trunk Testing for four DMS-250 switches. A knowledge of Inter-Machine Trunks (Fiber Optics Links) and Feature Groups (D,C,B) specification requirement. Documentation of all Trunk Testing and DMS systems setup's for next day report generation and status.

To setup and install a Northern Telecom Digital Multiplex Switch 100 at the various customer location in the New York Metropolitan area. My duties consisted of checking architectural and mechanical drawings of the site Central Office to the ground plans for the layout of equipment bays. Setup necessary personal computers to mainframe links for daily engineering changes, site equipment updates and company bulletins from head office. Supervise an 8 or 10 man crew of subcontractors. Keep tract of time and work flow of site equipment installation to meet customer dead-lines. Check and correct any and all quality and misinstalled work.
