Two of the best-known calls from Sicily Island are IT9ZGY (Piero) and IT9TAI (Dom). Less knows is probably that Piero and Dom are brothers. Piero and Dom are both DXCC Honor Roll mixed with 384 countries confirmed all time's. Piero Marino IT9ZGY became a Radio Amateur in 1952 and he now is retired. In former times was Vice-President of A.R.I. National Council for ten years and he also was President of A.R.I.(Associazione Radioamatori Italiani) of Sicily Island for many years. He was also one the founders of the " DX OLD TIMERS CLUB ", together with IT9SEZ, now KB5GL, W4VPD, W0QGI, I8AA, I8KDB and IT9TAI. From 1962 until 1967, Piero was DX-editor of the " Radio Rivista ", the official magazine of the A.R.I. In the 70s years he was the President of the A.R.I. Radio Club of Palermo. Past Charmain of the Board of Statutary Auditor of Associazione Radioamatori Italiani - A.R.I. - Since 1952 he has made more than 160.000 contacts on all bands and he is active on HF-VHF-UHF but Piero prefer Contest and 160 meter activity. W4VPD has been the QSL-manager for these DX-pedition. He is the QSL-MANAGER FOR A61AT, IH9ONU, 1A0KM/IT and ZA1BM. 160 meter and DX-Contest, specially all CQ-Magazine Contest, are his favourite activities. He also enjoys meteor scatter works on 2 meter. Piero Marino IT9ZGY, sposato - due figli, si è appassionato all’attività radiantistica sin da ragazzo ascoltando casualmente sulla radio di casa marca CGE, nella banda dei 40 metri AM, l’appello accorato di alcuni radioamatori che descrivevano la devastante alluvione del Polesine avvenuta nel 1951. Nello stesso anno richiese il nominativo di SWL e gli fu assegnato l’indicativo IT1-006. Il suo primo QSO fu effettuato in “AM” il 25 ottobre 1952 con 4X4DK/ZC6, Palestina. Da allora, oltre 180.000 collegamenti (senza contare altrettanti QSO effettuati durante i Contest effettuati nelle categorie “multi-multi” e “multi-singolo” con nominativi speciali) sono il frutto della sua intensissima attività radiantistica ( dai 28 MHz ai 1200 MHz) che lo vede ancora in lizza nelle classifiche mondiali dei maggiori diplomi. 390 DXCC countries “All Time” confirmed on mixed mode. Socio del Radio Club Amatori nel 1951, si iscrisse all’ARI nel 1952 e da allora è stato sempre al servizio dell’Associazione alla quale ha dedicato oltre 60 anni della sua vita. E’ stato uno dei fondatore della Sezione di Palermo e ne ha coperto, per oltre un decennio, gli incarichi di Consigliere e Segretario e per un altro decennio ha diretto la Sezione nella qualità di Presidente. Nel 1969 fu l’ideatore e uno degli organizzatori del Raduno degli OM Siciliani e ne organizzò ben 9 edizioni. Ha ricoperto la carica elettiva di Presidente del Comitato Regionale Sicilia per circa 15 anni e recentemente ne è stato nominato Presidente Onorario. Ha fatto parte del Consiglio Direttivo Nazionale negli anni 1977/78. In seguito, è stato rieletto ai vertici nazionali ed è stato confermato per oltre 12 anni. Ha ricoperto la carica di Vice Presidente Nazionale dell’ARI per circa sei anni – Nei recenti anni passati è stato altresì nominato Consigliere Delegato per i rapporti con i Comitati Regionali – Nel 1992 è stato ammesso a far parte al Ruolo d’Onore dell’ARI del quale attualmente ne è il Fiduciario. Nel 2012 gli è stato assegnato il Top Honour Roll e nominato Life Memeber dell’ARI. Negli ultimi due trienni è stato nominato Memoria Storica dell’ARI unitamente a Franco Arenghi I4LCK. E’ stato eletto Sindaco supplente nello scorso triennio e nel 2012 ha ricoperto la carica di Presidente del Collegio Sindacale dell’ARI.. Dal 1962 al 1967 nella qualità di DX.manager ha curato su Radio Rivista la Rubrica “Com’è il DX” unitamente a IT9TAI
E’ stato uno dei fondatori del “DX OLD TIMERS CLUB” – Fa parte del Club Alta Velocità HSC nr. 656 , A1 Operator Club – INORC - TOPS CW CLUB - e tanti altri prestigiosi Club internazionali.-
Numerosi sono stati gli articoli da lui scritti su Radio Rivista, ma la sua più grande soddisfazione è stata la pubblicazione su Antenna Book Compendium Vol.7 (edito dalla ARRL) di un suo studio sulla propagazione ionosferica. E’ stato definito The “Man From Sicily” in un articolo apparso nel febbraio del 1997 sulla rivista americana CQ CONTEST e “Mr. Sicily” da CQ MAGAZINE, anch’essa rivista radio americana, dopo il suo successo mondiale nel Contest 160 metri CW del 1991.
