Astley Hall is a beautiful manor house overlooking a lake in extensive parkland. It was built in the 1580s by the Charnock family. In the 1600s the timber facade was replaced by brick, and in the 1700s the formal gardens were changed to parkland and the stable block and coach house were added. Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed at the Hall in 1648.
The Hall passed to Chorley Corporation in 1922, and the Astley Hall Museum and Art Gallery opened on 31st May 1924.
The rooms are laid out in various styles from the 16th to 19th centuries and include magnificent decorated ceilings. A Remembrance Room, commemorating the Chorley Pals who died in World War 1, is on the First Floor.
We are transmitting on 29th September 2013
