Biography
As a child' l was introduced to ham radio by my Uncle John Crosby(VE3AVK). That was 65 years ago and it changed my life forever. While visiting with him he gave me the opportunity to speak on his radio to a station in South America. Frightened about l would say, l simply asked about the weather there. I will never forget that this voice in the ether came back and told me what his weather was like in that far away place.
I learned the Morse code shortly after and practiced daily with a friend. I loved that l was able to have those secret communications without those around me knowing what l was saying.
After many years of just being a shortwave listener and later a CBer, l was encouraged by a new friend whose call is now NA6X to pursue my novice license. 11 days later (Oct 23rd 1973), he asked me how l was doing on my code and asked me to receive some code for five minutes to determine my progress. Surprisingly, l passed the code test!!! About a week later, l passed the written test and received my first license on March 30th 1974.
Being a amateur radio operator has without question, been a escalation of the opportunies that life has presented to me for which l will be forever grateful.
