Biography
Hi my name is Ron N3CHX!
I have been a ham since 1957! Look up my main call on QRZ for my bio before my venture into QRP!
I relocated to North Carolina in 2020 during Covid! I got my station on the air in July 2021! MY station consisted of a IC -7300 to a MFJ 993B autotuner feeding a Hustler 5BTV antenna, mounted on a 4 foot high by 385-foot-long steel galvanized chain-link fence! This combination earned me WAS on RTTY, FT8, FT4 digital modes as well as a DXCC with over 150 countries!
Byran W3BFO, an avid QRPer and SOTA/POTA activator, wanted me to try QRP, but I always felt life was too short for QRP! But after some persuasion, I decided to purchase a 200 milliwatts Zach Tech WSPR beacon transmitter! It runs 200 milliwatts on 40, 30, 20, 15 and 10 meters feeding a fan dipole at 20 foot high! the equipment was mounted in a shed on my property in NC in November 2023 and activated! I couldn't believe the results! The WSPR beacon was being heard all over the USA, Canada, Europe and South America! The crowning moment came in December 2023, when it was heard by DP0GVN/2 a German Research station in Antarctica! I was hooked!
I purchased a QDX Digital Transceiver by QRP Labs and after a 4 month wait for an assembled unit, I got on the air on April 2024 running 4.5 watts to my main antenna system! As of August 2024, I have over 1100 QRP contacts Need only 2 states for WAS and have 51 countries to date! The best to date is Australia in June 2024! To date I have contacts in Europe, Canada, South America, Africa and on and on! Not bad for a guy who didn't believe in QRP!
I have just purchased a Xiegue X-6100 HF/50 MHz Transceiver! A great little transceiver! Come join the fun on the bands with QRP
