Biography
I've been a ham since passing Novice at the Morris Radio club in Morris Plains NJ in 1979.
Except for the 10 years between 2003 and 2013 I have been very interested and involved in ham radio including a bunch of clubs.
I'm a bit transient, historically. I lived in the HoustonTX, AllentownPA, PhiladelphiaPA, MorristownNJ. NashuaNH, nyNY, AlbanyNY, SeattleWA, OrlandoFL, and RaleighNC metro areas since I got my ham license. I've been in Raleigh NC since 2007.
I've worked with VHF SSB, repeaters, satellite, packet radio, and FM. I regularly use 75m SSB, 40m SSB, and soon, 10m SSB. Generally speaking, I'm not a DXer. Usually, I use modes appropriate for reliable communications, skeds and a net or 2. Kid of boring on HF. I like to monitor a couple of VHF/UHF frequencies, local 444.525 repeater and 146.52 simplex when i can.
I enjoy working with groups of people on long-term tasks. Packet radio networks, repeater networks. I'm currently working on building a packet network NCPACKET and I run a monthly social club meeting for RARS (Raleigh ARS).

My wife KB2TNR is involved with the RARS, as am I. Nancy is RARSfest chairman. We both serve on the RARS board of directors.
I run a 'new-ham' which is a fun hands-on (when possible) educational hour about new-ham related topics including making coax cables, demonstrating DC line-loss, fusing, power distribution, diplexers, antenna construction, FM desense, and other topics. This meeting is in the 90 minutes before the start of the RARS General meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of every month.
I also run the RARS (Raleigh Amateur Radio Society) Gathering social event every 4th Tuesday at the Ridge Road Baptist Church. Come stop by and meet your locals and play some radio. If you have something interesting to show, bring it and we'll make a table available for you. 7pm, 4th Tuesday of every month. 2011 Ridge Road, Raleigh.

I do HF mobile, mostly on 17 and 40m. I'm also on the 444.525 North Raleigh repeater.
I have a dozen radios involved in the packet radio network and I maintain 2 stations at volunteer houses where the hams are not active, a station at home and a station at my office building. Our local network, NCPACKET, has about 45 stations, all but one of which is at a ham's house, and all are on 24/7.
