Biography

Ham radio is a great complement to my other hobby, sailing. I have operated mostly on digital modes, worked WAS in 1981 in RTTY and migrated then to Amtor. Worked a lot of 1200 Baud packet, again from the Sailboat or while traveling overseas. I saw a Pactor 1 kit at the Ham Show in Friedrichshafen, DL and bought two on the spot. Shared it with my Friend Julius W9UWE in Chicago and was one of the first four Hams to operate Pactor 1 in the US with an STA by the FCC. Still operate Pactor today, although I have a Pactor 4 modem now. Operate also Robust Packet (RP) with an SCS tracker, a neat TNC. Moved from Silicon Valley to Portland in 2005 and love that city in spite of the rain. I built most of my antennae and consider myself a hardware guy, but do plan on learning a bit of programming. While sailing in the British Virgin Islands, I operated with call VP2VHH.
